چکیده

Vortices in superfluid 3He-B have been observed to undergo a core transition. We discuss the analog phenomenon in relativistic field theories which admit embedded global domain walls, vortices and monopoles with a core phase structure. They are present in scalar field theories with approximate global symmetries which are broken both spontaneously and in parts explicitly. For a particular range of parameters their symmetric core exhibits an instability and decays into the nonsymmetric phase. 1 Talk presented at the ”Formation of Topological Defects” ESF Network Meeting, Grenoble, France, September 1997. Phase Transitions in the Core of Global Embedded Defects

We demonstrate the existence of global monopole and vortex configurations whose core exhibits a phase structure. We determine the critical values of parameters for which the transition from the symmetric to the non-symmetric phase occurs and discuss the novel dynamics implied by the non-symmetric cores for defect interactions. We model phase transitions in the core of global embedded topologica...

Cosmological Symmetry Breaking and Generation of Electromagnetic Field

Cosmological phase transitions accompanied by some kind of symmetry breaking would cause the creation of topological defects and the resulting production of primordial magnetic field. Moreover, such a procedure inevitably affects the cosmic background radiation and it may be observed today. Motivated by the existence of stabilized embedded defects in the standard model of elementary interaction...

Topological String Defect Formation During the Chiral Phase Transition

We argue for the existence of topological string defects in chiral sigma models. We discuss the formation of these strings during the chiral phase transitions in the early Universe and in the high energy heavy-ion collisions. Chiral symmetry as well as deconfinement are restored in the core of these defects. Formation of a dense network of string defects is likely to play an important role in t...

Evolution of topological defects during inflation.

Topological defects can be formed during inflation by phase transitions as well as by quantum nucleation. We study the effect of the expansion of the Universe on the internal structure of the defects. We look for stationary solutions to the field equations, i.e. solutions that depend only on the proper distance from the defect core. In the case of very thin defects, whose core dimensions are mu...

Local Gauge Invariance and Formation of Topological Defects

In superconductors, and in other systems with a local U(1) gauge invariance, there are two mechanisms that form topological defects in phase transitions. In addition to the standard Kibble mechanism, thermal fluctuations of the magnetic field also lead to defect formation. This mechanism is specific to local gauge theories, predicts a qualitatively different spatial defect distribution and is t...
